Like Mother, Like Daughter?

Author: Karen Schachter, LICSW, CHC

Copyright (c) 2009 Healthy Bodies, Happy Minds

We moms have a tough path to walk as we help our daughters navigate the sometimes choppy waters of growing up girl. It’s our job to protect our children and do our best to keep them safe and healthy, yet we also have to allow them to grow, stretch and learn from their own mistakes. It’s a fine line between letting them be who they are and wanting to “tweak” them just a little bit so they don’t suffer from the same mistakes or struggles that we did.

When it comes to healthy eating and a positive body image, this fine line can feel fragile and confusing, particularly if you struggle with these issues yourself.

When I teach workshops or work individually with moms, I am always asked some of the same questions: Should I let my kids have desert every day? How do I deal with their love of sweets? How can I help her stop eating when she’s not hungry anymore? How can I help her lose weight without making her feel bad about her body? How can I help her feel good about her body, no matter what its size? How can I help her feel good about herself and treat herself with respect?

We humans need Purpose in our lives. Without it, we’re either paralyzed or going around in circles, frustrated, bored, bewildered or lost. Our inherent need for purpose gives rise to questions such as “Why am I here?” and “What’s the meaning of life?” or even, “What is the point to life?” Since time began, humans have asked this question, driven by those deep seated needs for purpose, meaning and significance.

When you find your life’s purpose, everything changes. When your deepest needs are being met, you feel joyful and fulfilled. You live with greater focus and clarity about who you are, what you stand for and where you are going. This clarity gives rise to your personal power: Confidence, commitment and inspired action will naturally rise up inside you when you are living passionately with clear direction in your life.

So how do you discover your life’s purpose? Well, you must first let go of all the false purposes you’ve been taught by your family, schooling and other social conditioning. You may even have an idea hovering around in your head that you have no purpose at all - you’ll have to let go of that one too!

Understand that your Life Purpose grows and changes over time. What is right for you now will have developed into something else in a few years time. 10 Steps To Improved Concentration

Author: Martin Mak

Now, more than ever, people are finding it more difficult to get their mind concentrated on the task at hand. This is because of the fast paced world we live in. We are often called to multi-task, or, to do a few tasks at the same time. For example, a stay-at-home mom may have to prepare dinner for the family while keeping an eye or listening out for the cries of her baby. An office executive may have to work on a report, while distracted by an urgent meeting or to assist in another area.

Concentration is not a natural skill. It is a learned skill. And it is a vital skill practiced by a martial arts practitioner, a surgeon, an athlete or anyone who needs to focus on a task at hand. But with a focused mind, you can get more done, in a shorter period of time. Here then are 10 steps to better;

1. Try to eliminate distractions. This is often easier said than done. Most times, if you can eliminate 20% of your distractions, you find that you can do the task at hand 80% faster. This is the 20/80 pareto rule. You can unhook the telephone for example, or if your are doing some work on the computer linked to the internet, make yourself “invisible” if you are often pinged for a chat by someone you know.
